Mentoring opportunity for international students

What is mentoring?

"Mentoring is a supportive form of employee training that many experts believe should be independent from other training activities. Mentoring usually takes place outside the conventional top-down employee-manager relationship. Instead, the mentee sets the agenda based on their own development needs, with the mentor providing guidance to help the mentee achieve their goals."

This mentoring opportunity will give students a chance to link with an experienced professional who

works with a major international vehicle rental company and who has considerable experience in

graduate recruitment. He is ideally placed to provide excellent tips on job search strategy and making yourself stand out from the crowd.

This opportunity will be suited to students based in the Central Scotland area and it is open to students from all subject backgrounds. You must be motivated, enthusiastic and willing to commit both your time and effort to the mentoring relationship.

The mentoring will take place over a period of approximately nine months and will include a combination of face to face meetings, telephone and email contacts at pre-arranged intervals. The time commitment will be no more than a few hours per month.

The Careers Service will once again this semester be running the highly popular series of careers seminars designed primarily, though not exclusively for international students looking to remain in the UK to find employment beyond graduation. The series includes sessions on job seeking in Scotland and the rest of the UK, CV's, application forms and interview technique. The fifth and final session provides students with the opportunity to have their CVs checked and participate in practice interviews with real graduate employers.

Marketing project with a Scottish company

A company involved in renewable energy own a specialist computer model which is used to identify the location of commercially viable hydropower sites in Scotland. They are actively seeking overseas partner organisations for collaboration. This student project will focus on the development of a marketing strategy to have the computer model adopted in another country on a commercial basis.

This project represents an opportunity to gain an insight into the working environment of an energy company
and to gain real experience of the design and implementation of a marketing plan. You can also develop an insight into renewable energy and hydro power specifically.

The main focus of the project will be for you to:

Identify an appropriate country(s) of interest
Identify possible classes of channel partners, then specific organisations
Devise an engagement strategy
Engage with overseas organisations to explore their potential interest
There may also be the opportunity to participate with the Company in scoping of in-country projects and
negotiation of contracts.

Jim Campbell, careers adviser for the Business School, continues to offer short 30-minute sessions for students to receive feedback on written applications (whether that be a CV, cover letter or application form) and have the opportunitiy to be inspired by viewing examples from other students.

These sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons within the Business School. No more than 6 students will be permitted access to each session to ensure that each participant's application is given adequate attention.

The Careers Service recognises that many of our international students return home after their studies. Some go back immediately after graduation, others return after spending time either working, or looking for work in the UK. We are keen to know what more we could do to help international students make the transition from Scotland to home.

What support could we offer you before you return home? Should we arrange for international employers to deliver presentations by video? Should we organise more virtual careers fairs to help students connect with employers back home? And what help could we give you once you are back at home? Would it be helpful if we could organise careers conferences in Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.? Would it be helpful if we could arrange interviews for our recent graduates with employers in India? Should we offer CV clincs in different countries?

The University of Glasgow Careers Service is pleased to announce an opportunity for international students to gain experience of the Scottish workplace. Up to 8 students are being offered a chance of being assigned a mentor within a prestigous legal firm. The mentor is an experienced professional with expertise in the areas of accountancy and graduate recruitment. He is ideally placed to help students gain more insight into professional areas such as law, accountancy and consultancy and can also offer useful job seeking tips from the employers' perspective.

This mentoring will take place over a period of approximately nine months and will include a combination of face to face meetings, telephone and email contacts at pre-arranged intervals. There will also be the opportunity to meet and compare notes with other mentees , as this mentor will be working with a number of mentees, individually and as a group. Time commitment will be no more than a few hours per month.

You must be motivated, enthusiastic and willing to commit both your time and effort to the mentoring relationship.

How does it work?

Firstly, you e-mail us to make a request for 'proof-reading' at least two weeks ahead of an application deadline.We then send your application to one of our proof readers.The proof-reader checks your work and comments on your use of English, e.g. vocabulary, verb tense, use of definite/indefinite article, spelling, and punctuation. At this stage, they may contact you by phone or suggest a meeting to clarify points of meaning.The proof reader returns your application by email.

Respond to Government proposals to reduce student immigration

The new coalition Government in the UK is seeking to reduce net migration to the UK and has proposed a number of measures which will affect the permission of international students and graduates to work in the UK . These measaures include a proposal to close the Post Study Work visa (PSW) scheme which has been very popular with international students and graduates. Institutions AND individuals are being offered an opportunity to raise concerns by responding to the proposals as part of a consultation process which ends on 31st of January 2011.

It would be advisable to submit a complete proforma response even if you have to say don’t know to some questions. Otherwise there may be a danger of your views not being taken into consideration. I have included some background information on some of the careers-related questions below:

Key background information regarding the current rules around student immigration

For Q9: What changes do you think we should make to the Tier 1 Post Study Work route?
Currently the Tier 1 Post Study Work route enables an international student to apply to work in the UK after their studies for up to 2 years. The Government proposes to close the Tier 1 Post Study Work route completely but also invites views on any transitional arrangements or on restricting it in some form e.g. to those with a higher degree such as a PhD.
It is also worth noting that in November the Government announced changes to Tier 1 General and Tier 2 Skilled Worker which also limit the routes by which international graduates can remain in the UK to work and also the numbers who could do so. From 1 April the Tier 1 General route will be abolished and there will be an overall reduction in the number of non EEA nationals who will be able to apply to come to the UK to work under the Tier 2 Sponsored Skilled worker category. In your response you might consider the following points:

Should current students who are due to graduate in 2011 be allowed to apply for PSW as they were actively encouraged to come to the UK with a promise of a right to work on graduation?
Would you have chosen to invest in the UK if you knew there was not going to be access to PSW?

For Q10: Do you think that we should restrict further the amount of work students should be allowed to undertake while studying?
Currently non-EEA students on degree level courses are allowed to work 20 hours per week during term time and unlimited hours during vacation. The definition of "term time" is dependent on individual institutions.

The Government proposes that Students should only be allowed to work on campus during the week and to work ‘as many hours as they wish’ for any external employer at weekends and during vacation periods. We are not clear whether the UKBA really intends international students to work unlimited hours at weekends during term time!

In your response you may want to think about the following questions:

How practical would it be for students only to work on campus during the week and off campus at weekends both from a student and an employer perspective?
Should any students be encouraged to work unlimited hours at the weekends?
What does 'on campus' mean? Does it mean you can only work for the University? Or does it include private companies that operate on campus, eg? John Smith bookshop?
