Job search and career planning seminars

The Careers Service will once again this semester be running the highly popular series of careers seminars designed primarily (though not exclusively) for international students looking to remain in the UK to find employment beyond graduation. The series includes sessions on job seeking in Scotland and the rest of the UK, CV's, application forms and interview technique. The fifth and final session provides students with the opportunity to have their CVs checked and participate in practice interviews with real graduate employers.

The sessions will run at 1pm and again at 3pm on the following dates:

Tuesday 12 February: Seminar 1 - Job seeking in the UK

Tuesday 19 February: Seminar 2 - CV writing
Tuesday 26 February: Seminar 3 - Application forms
Tuesday 05 March: Seminar 4 - Interview technique
Tuesday 12 March: Seminar 5 - Application and Interview review session

Application checking sessions for Business School students, Wednesday 09 November 2011

Tomorrow afternoon's regular Careers Service application checking session for the Business School will be hosted by a special guest employer - PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC). There are still places available and you can book through the College of Social Science Moodle site.

Why should you attend?
The session will be led by Andrea Schroeder, Careers Advisor from the Career Service at the University of Muenster who works with graduate recruiters in Germany on a daily basis and is well placed to offer tips and advice on what employers look for in applications. She can tell you which CV formats work best, how to structure answers to open questions on application forms and much more.
The presentation will be delivered live from Germany using video technology. The technology allows for two-way communication which means that participants will be able to ask questions in real time.

Application checking sessions for students in the College of Social Sciences

Do you need an application checked? Jim Campbell, careers adviser for the Business School, continues to offer short 30-minute sessions for students to receive feedback on written applications (whether that be a CV, cover letter or application form) and have the opportunitiy to be inspired by viewing examples from other students.

These sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons within the Business School. No more than 6 students will be permitted access to each session to ensure that each participant's application is given adequate attention.

You can book a place one week in advance via the College of Social Science moodle site.

How can the Careers Service better support GU students/graduates looking for employment in their own home countries?

The Careers Service recognises that many of our international students return home after their studies. Some go back immediately after graduation, others return after spending time either working, or looking for work in the UK.  We are keen to know what more we could do to help international students make the transition from Scotland to home. 

What support could we offer you before you return home? Should we arrange for international employers to deliver presentations by video? Should we organise more virtual careers fairs to help students connect with employers back home?  And what help could we give you once you are back at home? Would it be helpful if we could organise careers conferences in Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.? Would it be helpful if we could arrange interviews for our recent graduates with employers in India? Should we offer CV clincs in different countries?

CV/Application checking sessions now available within the College of Social Sciences

Each wednesday afternoon, Jim Campbell (International Careers Adviser) runs a number of small group application checking sessions within the Adam Smith Building. By attending one of these short 30-minute sessions you will receive feedback on your own written application (whether that be a CV, cover letter or application form) and have the opportunitiy to be inspired by viewing examples from other students.

No more than 6 students will be permitted access to each session to ensure that each participant's application is given adequate attention.

Remember - you can only sign up to the sessions 1 week in advance. If moodle does not allow you to sign up to your chosen time this is because it is already full. Simply choose another time and sign up. 

Once you have registered, simply turn up at the alotted time with a hard copy of your application.
