Careers presentations for international students, Spring 2014

Over the course of this semester, the Careers Service will be running a programme of careers talks aimed primarily (though not exclusively) at international students. The topics have been carefully chosen to address some of the most common queries that international students bring to the Careers Service. Next week's presentations are as follows:

The Careers Service will once again this semester be running the highly popular series of careers seminars designed primarily for international students. The series includes five 90-minute sessions covering topics such as  graduate job search, making effective written applications and preparing for different interview formats.

The sessions will run at 3pm on the following dates:

Tuesday 01 October: Seminar 1 – Graduate job search
Tuesday 08 October: Seminar 2 – Gaining work experience whilst in the UK
Tuesday 15 October: Seminar 3 - CV writing
Tuesday 22 October: Seminar4 - Application forms
Tuesday 29 October: Seminar 5 - Interview technique

Please note that when you register you are committing to attending all five seminars. In other words you do not need to register for each session individually.

Job search and career planning seminars


The Careers Service will once again this semester be running the highly popular series of careers seminars designed primarily for international students looking to remain in the UK to find employment beyond graduation. The series includes sessions on job seeking in Scotland and the rest of the UK, CV's, application forms and interview technique. The fifth and final session provides students with the opportunity to have their CVs checked and participate in practice interviews with real graduate employers.

The sessions will run at 3pm on the following dates:

Tuesday 02 October: Seminar 1 - Job seeking in the UK
Tuesday 09 October: Seminar 2 - CV writing
Tuesday 16 October: Seminar 3 - Application forms
Tuesday 23 October: Seminar 4 - Interview technique
Tuesday 30 October: Seminar 5 - Application and Interview review session

Tomorrow afternoon's regular Careers Service application checking session for the Business School will be hosted by a special guest employer - PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC). There are still places available and you can book through the College of Social Science Moodle site.

Application checking sessions for students in the College of Social Sciences

Do you need an application checked? Jim Campbell, careers adviser for the Business School, continues to offer short 30-minute sessions for students to receive feedback on written applications (whether that be a CV, cover letter or application form) and have the opportunitiy to be inspired by viewing examples from other students.

These sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons within the Business School. No more than 6 students will be permitted access to each session to ensure that each participant's application is given adequate attention.

You can book a place one week in advance via the College of Social Science moodle site.

CV/Application checking sessions now available within the College of Social Sciences

Each wednesday afternoon, Jim Campbell (International Careers Adviser) runs a number of small group application checking sessions within the Adam Smith Building. By attending one of these short 30-minute sessions you will receive feedback on your own written application (whether that be a CV, cover letter or application form) and have the opportunitiy to be inspired by viewing examples from other students.

No more than 6 students will be permitted access to each session to ensure that each participant's application is given adequate attention.

Click here to register for these sessions. Once logged onto the moodle site,  just look for the link to the Careers Service CV drop-in sessions.

Remember - you can only sign up to the sessions 1 week in advance. If moodle does not allow you to sign up to your chosen time this is because it is already full. Simply choose another time and sign up. 

Once you have registered, simply turn up at the alotted time with a hard copy of your application.
