Mandarin speakers required for interpreting work in Edinburgh

China-UK Connections through Culture is looking for student interpreters

China - UK Connections through Culture (CTC) is a joint initiative of the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the British Council with support from the Scottish Government and the Welsh Assembly Government. It aims to further develop cultural co-operation between the UK and China with a view to improving overall relations, including diplomatic and trade ties, between the two countries.

CTC is organising a delegation of 15 Chinese theatre promoters to attend the British Council Edinburgh Showcase on 22-29 August 2009. We are looking for two Chinese postgraduate students to help interpret for some of the Chinese delegates who don’t speak English.

Duty and Standards:
Consecutive interpreting (both Chinese to English and English to Chinese) during formal meetings/presentations
Standards: all the key information in any speech/presentation/Q&A session should be interpreted accurately and clearly

Consecutive interpreting during informal meetings/discussions/talks
Standards: proactively facilitate Chinese delegates to communicate with their UK counterparts and vice versa during visits and networking events

Interpreting show programmes
Standards: precisely interpret (for the Chinese delegates who can’t read English) key information in show programmes pre or post shows.

Qualifications:
Postgraduate student (or above) majoring in Arts (preferably Interpretation, Applied Linguistics, Drama, Arts Management or Intercultural Communication)
Fluent in English and Mandarin
Good interpreting and presentation skills (previous experience preferred, please give evidence in CV where appropriate)
Knowledge of or demonstrable interest in UK and China arts with a particular strength in theatre or performing arts (please give evidence in CV where appropriate)
Available in Edinburgh on 22-29 August 2009
