Position Open to: Qualified Chinese Nationals and British Nationals with a valid "W" or "Z" visa.
Background:
The UK and China have a strategic partnership and cooperate in a range of areas in order to tackle global issues of common concern. One area is to strengthen and broaden our political links and understanding of each other’s political system and policies through government and political party exchanges. Your role will be a key part of facilitating mutual understanding, increasing the number of exchanges and dialogue.
You will support the Political team by analysing developments in Chinese politics and help UK officials engage with their Chinese counterparts.
The desired starting date for this position is 15 November 2010.
Main Duties:
- To ensure Political Section colleagues are informed of policies and events in Chinese politics by drawing on Chinese media and developing own contacts within government and academia;
- Conduct in-depth research using a variety of sources (media, academic, government) on Chinese politics and organizations;
- Translate diplomatic notes and important documents for the political section and ambassador;
- To arrange and accompany UK-based staff on official calls and be the lead interpreter for the section;
- To arrange networking events on political and social issues.

- Good knowledge of Chinese domestic policy and politics;
- Good administrative and IT skills
General Conditions:
We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, performance related bonus, good leave entitlement and insurance plan, multi-cultural environment, well-designed training and development opportunities etc. The gross starting salary for this position before all deductions is RMB8,587/month.
The successful candidate will be employed under locally employed staff conditions within the British Embassy. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/week from Monday to Friday. There will be the occasional need, especially during VIP visits and major events being organised by the team are taking place, to work additional hours for which overtime or time off in lieu will be given.
